1. Dixon Farms

The Dixon family has been farming in Lee County, Alabama since the 1850s but it wasn’t until 2010 that Ken and Garrett began Dixon Farms.

They are located near Lee Road, Salem, Alabama, and are committed to raising docile and top-gaining Angus cows for commercial producers.

In addition to their Angus breeding, Dixon also performs row crop operations and Agritourism services.

To ensure quality genetics, the cows go through the following stringent selection criteria:

  • Selection of sires that rank top 10 percent in docility (so they are easy to handle)
  • Selection of sires that rank top 25 percent for birth-weight (lower birth weights lower the chance of calving difficulties)
  • Selection of sires that rank 10 percent for scrotal circumference (an indicator of fertility)
  • Selection in the top 10 percent of $BeefEDPs

The Dixon Farms blog (on their website) provides more information for new (or experienced) buyers looking to add to their herd.

This ranch is owned and operated by Tracey, their husband Stephane, and their two kids Sydnee and Synclair.

Gleann Brook Acres raise their cattle humanely, on an open Alabama pasture in the hills of Bremen, Cullman County, without the use of antibiotics or hormones.

They are a fully organic, grass-fed, and grass-finished operation focused on maximizing the health of the cattle and providing great quality beef.

They focus on Highland due to their ability to tolerate tough conditions (even without shelter). Highlands can also calve well into their twenties.

Today the farm is operated by Bill, their son Tommy and their family.

Besides selling cattle, Maple Stock Farm also sells 100 percent Angus beef to consumers. Their beef is 100% pasture-raised.

Maples Stock Farm had its last sale in April 2021. You can pre-register for their next sale or download a copy of their sale book on their website. They’re also open to visits.

Their focus on Brangus comes from their strong fertility, maternal instincts, and environmental hardiness.

Lake Majestik Farms operates on about 5,000 acres of land and is a fully integrated cattle operation.

They are recognized by the International Brangus Breeders Association and offer several sale opportunities throughout the year.

H&H Farms is owned by Scotty Hooper and is located in Eastern Cullman County. They have close to 200 head of cattle and 360 acres of land for their livestock and 100 acres for hay.

The farm is a registered producer of Santa Gertrudis “Gerts” which they first purchased in 2000 with a couple of National Champion Bulls. Since then, they’ve concentrated on Gerts’ cattle DNA to get the right marbling and tenderness percentage.

They have a unique approach towards breeding, producing them for lean meat that calculates to a very low-fat content.

H&H Farms have been cross-breeding Gert cows with Angus and Hereford bulls to produce, what they call, “5 Star” cattle. They are now the largest 5 Star cattle producer in the Mississippi River.
