Wildwind Farm

Wildwind farm is located in Alabama, 18 miles northeast of Montgomery, in Wetumpka. The owner of the farm is Edith Grover.

The farm has been breeding high-quality Boer goats for more than 22 years. After Edith retired from politics and also from her director and commodity Chairperson position at the Farmer’s Federation Sheep and Goat, she began farming and started raising quality Boer goats.

The farm offers genetically enhanced full-blood colored and dapple Boers goats. They also have show stock goats of different age groups.

For many years, the farm only produced traditional Boers since the dapples and colored stock were unavailable. When the popularity of dappled goats was peaking, the farm shifted its focus to them and began raising the blacks and dapples.

The breeding program at the farm keeps producing high-quality goats and ensures that goats are competitive in the show ring and conform to the ABGA standard.

Edith takes pride in the structural correctness of the Does. These goats have excellent features and exhibit ideal growth and strength.

The Bucks come from a long heritage of Ennobled stock, and from some of the prominent genetics in the Boer goat industry.

Currently, the farm has about 80 goats, but that number goes up during the breeding season.

Lucy Creek Farms

Lucy Creek Farms is located across the Blount County line in Locust Fork town, Alabama. The farm breeds both Nigerians Dwarf and Nubian goats. The farm is a member of the American Dairy Goat Association (ADGA).

The owners’ interest in goats occurred by chance. In November 2017, the couple got a phone call from a friend about a just-born and abandoned baby goat, who did not have the time to bottle feed her.

The couple had no experience in feeding or raising a bottle baby goat but they took her in and kept the baby goat in a laundry basket and stayed with her for three weeks.

They called the goat “Lucy” and when the couple started a farm down the line, they named it after the baby goat. Within three of this incident, the couple bought five Does and began expanding the farm.

The farm’s goal is to breed every goat better and make the herd more productive. It means a goat needs to have correct conformation and capability to maintain its quality throughout the breeding session and its life span.

Currently, the farm has both Nubian Goats and Nigerian Dwarf Goats. Nubian Goats are sociable and have a laid-back demeanor. Since these goats are relatively easy to raise, keepers can train them faster. Besides, the sociable side of these goats makes them fun to have around.

The breeding of Nigerian Dwarfs happened rather unexpectedly when the owners brought a Doe for personal milking purposes. Then they became fond of these goats for their playful characteristics.

Holtz Farms Spanish Goats

Holtz Farms is located in Florala, Alabama. Occupying 105-acres of land, the farm raises Spanish goats and sells them in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and elsewhere.

The goats have Kensing and Weinheimer bloodlines and they help the farm breed top-quality goats that can adapt to all types of harsh weather conditions of the Southeast.

Several years back, Holtz Farms decided to raise Spanish goats along with other livestock on the farm to diversify the farm’s operation.

In 2014, the farm took a strategy to maximize its income potential by producing high-quality livestock. After buying cows and sheep, the farm also wanted to breed Spanish goats and bought 8 Spanish nannies and a buck.

That was a good beginning in terms of genetics as the farm began retaining the Does and some Bucks to expand the herd.

Spanish Goats do not have the nature to graze. They like forbs and also look to eat plenty of briers, brush, and leaves on trees as far as they can reach.

Spanish goats also eat weeds that cows don’t. Dog fennel weeds are a major problem in the farm’s pasture they can choke out the grass, and needs frequent mowing. By eating these weeds, the goats help keep them manageable and save the farm from expense.

Holtz Farms is a member of the Spanish Goat Association and the Spanish Goat Conservation Society, and all the foundation heard of the farm is DNA certified.

Lil’ Hill Farm

Lil’ Hill Farm is in Hillsboro, Alabama. The farm owners are the couple Sandie and Bruce Terry.

The idea of breeding goats came to their mind after reading an article on goats in Hobby Farms magazine. The couple had 20 acres of land, and that’s all they needed to have a head start and have fun doing that.

The couple was primarily looking for smaller animals that they could easily handle without much hassle, and goats fit the bill perfectly.

In 2004, Sandie and Bruce started raising Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats. The goats were purebred and registered with American Dairy Goat Association (ADGA).

Since then, the couple has purchased Does and Bucks from different parts of the country to enhance the genetics, have the right conformation, and milk production they were looking for.

The owners have been focusing on producing show-quality goats with top-notch conformation, and high-level milk-producing ability. So far, the results are highly satisfying.

The show goats of the farm have won three ADGA Grand Champion legs and many other show events.

The farm participates in ADGA DHIR Production Testing and ADGA Linear Appraisal.
